Producers are already planning to capitalize on the massive success of “Valentine’s Day” with “New Year’s Eve,” another film sure to be packed with big name celebrities in revolving stories about trying to find love and happiness on a special night. First came the successes of “Love Actually” and then “He’s Just Not That Into You,” and now with “Valentine’s Day” a hit, producers are hoping for the same returns with the same formula, different day. But they are forgetting a New Year’s Eve movie was already made just over 10 years ago, and it bombed.
“200 Cigarettes” came out in 1999 and followed the exact same multi-narrative/multi-star cast device of its followers, only without its success. The film follows different young people (including Kate Hudson, Ben Affleck, Dave Chappelle, Paul Rudd, Courtney Love, and Christina Ricci) all searching for a perfect night on New Year’s Eve in New York City, and run into tons of obstacles along the way. Relationships are ruined, new ones are unexpectedly formed. Some characters get what they want from the night, while others are surprised by what they receive. Sound familiar? These films have a common theme throughout. The question is, will New Year’s Eve work out, a second time around? If not, it will always end up on DVD, where it can be watched back to back with “200 Cigarettes.” Who wouldn’t like to watch the ball drop twice?

I remember really wanting to see this movie back in day, but I don’t remember much about it. Guess it wasn’t that great of a film after all. It had a cool cast though.
this article has made me want to check out both movies and compare. also, fabulous last sentence: “who wouldn’t like to watch the ball drop twice?”
