On December 3rd, 2009 a group of City College seniors hosted an event for the student body featuring food, prizes, music and a special message.
As you entered the room, you could hear the music of New York City—everything from Sanatra to Jay-Z. The smell cheesecake and pizza pies lingered. Students played games and entered raffles. They shared stories and discovered new things about the neighborhood right outside the gates of their campus.
The event, “Rated R(eal),” was hosted by Ion9 Communications on behalf of Heritage Heights Village, a community restoration initiative dedicated to revitalizing the Heritage Heights neighborhood for businesses and residents. The purpose was to get students to interact and connect with the neighborhood.
“The students of City College have a lot more in common with the Heritage Heights neighborhood than they think,” said Candra Simon, President of Ion9. “That’s what we wanted to show them through this event. Heritage Heights is an authentic New York neighborhood and City College is filled with authentic New Yorkers. We all don’t live in this neighborhood, but we do go to school here, so we should care about what goes on in the neighborhood. We share in the responsibility of taking care of it.”
